PRICE CRASH: Onkyo DV-BD606 slashed to £399.99

First it was going to be £500. Then yesterday the price was confirmed at £450. And today, Onkyo has slashed the price of its brand-new DV-BD606 Blu-ray player to just £399.99 – just 24 hours after the press release was issued.

Perhaps it's a sign of the times, given the current economic climate. Or perhaps Onkyo (like us) had already seen the player being sold on the internet for well under £400.

Either way, it's great news for you, the buyer. We already have a review sample of the player in our test rooms, with the results scheduled for publication in the January 2009 issue of What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision, on sale December 11th.

Hence why a "price irrespective" pecking order would be great. We're intelligent enough to work out the cost benefit for ourselves and as none of the prices manufacturers are slapping on products even vaguely reflect the price you can buy these goods for in the real world, an objective, non price list in order of greatness would be an even more useful and worthwhile tool. Come on What Hi-Fi!

Having seen your recent reviews of their AV Amps perhaps Onkyo are now using the tactic of bringing products out that are deliberately overpriced / underspeced then reducing the price to what it should have been in the first place in the hope of gaining favour with the reviewers - it works for Yamaha !

Would it be possible, given that there are not that many BluRay players on the market, for you to line them all up in a row in order of how good they are overall, utterly ignoring price / value for money.

Overall, I'd expect them to follow their pricing but there are bound to be a few exceptions, a player leapfrogging a more expensive machine, and it would make for a truly awesome, definitive Christmas list!
