A solid performer that hardly ever puts a foot wrong: the Roksan should be on any sub-£1000 turntable audition list

Even tonal balance; smooth delivery; luscious looks and great attention to fit

Not quite the timing of a champ

The first thing you’ll notice about the Radius 5 is its sublime looks. The acrylic platter sits on a sub-plinth (the plate below the platter), which, in a bid to minimise unwanted vibrations, is isolated from the main plinth. To further reduce interference, Roksan uses a ‘compliantly moulded’ motor. In other words, the motor is part of the main unit and it helps absorb torque variation and keep the platter stable.

This obsessiveness with stability continues to the NIMA unipivot tone arm. It is without wiring – the signal from the cartridge to the phono-head amplifier transmits via flat printed circuit board cable. A mirror-chromed counterweight and anti-skate weight complete the features.

Setting up is tricky - patience is required, but once up and running the Roksan rewards with an enjoyable presentation.

A match for the best
With the exception of all-out timing and attack (it’s not quite as accurate or as punchy) its performance is a match for the best around – and it’s relatively sensibly priced. The vocals during Nitin Sawhney’s Human set are hauntingly realistic, while good detail resolution means the delicate yet intricate percussion is easy to follow.

The Roksan takes an even-handed approach to frequency delivery, and tonal balance is level whatever the musical genre. Switch to Nirvana’s oppressive Bleach and guitars, drums and Kurt Cobain’s throat receive equal billing, while good dynamics help convey excitement.

The Roksan’s soundstage isn’t the most spacious and the same goes for attack, but remember this turntable costs less than nominal rivals. A transparent finish is available for £850, but for the money this sonically transparent Roksan is well worth an audition.
