It's Friday, so let's allow ourselves to be taken in by an exciting sounding rumour: six classic James Bond films are to get the Blu-ray treatment (if French film site filmsactu.com is to be believed).

The website is reporting Fox France, the distributor for MGM film, has Dr No, Thunderball, Live and Let Die, From Russia With Love, Die Another Day and For Your Eyes Only scheduled for a November release on BD.

As we say, it's only a rumour but we can only hope that it's true and that the releases make their way over to this side of the channel, too.

So far Daniel Craig's debut, Casino Royale, is the only Bond to go Blu' – setting as it did a very high bar for future discs to follow.

Naturally if we find out any further information you'll be the first to know...

So, my prediction in the Forums earlier this year that Sony (which owns MGM) would release the Bond back catalogue on Blu-ray to promote the release of Quantum of Solace (the new Bond movie - UK premiere 31st October) could be true? Here's hoping.

In the meantime, i'll interrogate my Sony Pictures contacts....

Will you feel very smug if your right ;O)  ?

Clare Newsome June 6, 2008 11:06

More happy that it's happening (until I work out how much it's going to cost me to buy all the Bond films, AGAIN)!

Well thats how they get us...Cinema ->VHS -> DVD -> DVD Remastered -> DVD Remastered Plus More Extras -> Blue Ray and so on :O)

Very odd selection of films to start with, none of them really representing the best of any of the Bond eras. I'm surprised that the list doesn't include "Goldfinger" given that it had a High Definition digital outing in cinemas last year, and does include "Die Another Day", a film so poor that it forced a rethink of the whole franchise.

Does Blu-ray greatly enhance the quality of older movies ?

Assuming the transfer is made from a high-quality/restored print, yes old movies do look superb when viewed in high definition.

After all, think of the cinema screen sizes on which they were designed to be viewed.

The restored high definition digital version of "Goldfinger" screened in cinemas last year was was absolutely stunning. I was amazed at how much depth of detail and colour could be reclaimed from a film over 40 years old.

Actually 20th Century Fox have the distribution rights for the Bond films previous to Casino Royal. They will be released under the MGM logo though.

Looking forward to these.
