olympic pride

i seem to be turning into an old woman.  every medal ceremony that has had a british competitor on the podium, has had me getting a bit "emotional".  they've done fantastically well though.  usain bolt in the 100 metres was amazing and could have beat the world record by more.  i'm debating staying up to watch the bmx finals tonight.  shanaze reade, who is the british entry in the womens race, is a physical freak.  i used to race bmx, and at one race, a 15 year old shanaze was there.  during gate practice, which is all about explosive acceleration, she absolutely nailed me all the way down the first straight.  i was 29 at the time and leading my area points series, and at 6 foot 2 inches and 13 1/2 stone, not exactly a waif.  i avoided lining up in the same gates as her after that!Big Smile

do most hifi types avoid sports like the plague, or has anyone else been getting inspired by the fruits of our athletes hard work?  i'm considering taking up bmx again, despite some very painful injuries in the past.

Re: olympic pride

Do I avoid sports! Tut tut tut! Ok, so maybe I'm not good at rugby or football, but I like my mountain biking that's for sure! I was planning to get a Kona Coiler Duluxe, but my hand "slipped" onto the bid for a new tuner and then my wallet "fell" into the hands of my local hi-fi dealer for some new headphones, so that was the end of that.

I have never done BMXing, but you lot seem madder than us downhill guys sometimes! I burst a tyre on a dropoff yesterday though, and bent the rim a bit on my GT I-drive and I don't have the money to fix it! Sad

Re: olympic pride

Loving the Olympics too - and loving it taking football out of the media for a while as well - our Olympians make our footballers look pathetic!

Bit of a sporty type I'm afraid - compete in 10k trail running races (best 5th out of 700 last year), loads of MTBing (got 4 MTBs, ride 10m every day before work), weights twice a week, surf (used to compete) a lot, used to compete in kickboxing (got 4th in the UK briefly), walk.run the dog 3+m a day, etc, etc.  In fact a day without exercise feels utterly wrong.

Oh and our house is competely remote and set in 5 acres (gardening here is an extreme sport!)  so we can blast music all day!

I'm an ex downhill boy myself Mr. Hughes would you believe! Used to race the Nambs series (though don't know if it's still going) but due to expensive hi-fi purchases I couldn't afford the gear to keep up with the big boys.

Got myself a 24seven 24"er though and take regular trips down to my mates near Chicksands!

Where do you ride?

No way, we go to Chicksands all the time! - and Aston Hill and Woburn Sands! I've stil got a GT Avalanche 2.0 Disc '05 though - same here, hi-fi takes all the money away! I was planning on having a go down the dual-slalom today at Chicky with my mate, but we had a bit of a storm so gave up!

i rode dh for a couple of years, did a couple of nambs events, but prefered riding for fun.  i don't think any expensive gear would have let me keep up with the big boys.  i once met steve peat at wharncliffe woods near sheffield, i would have needed an engine on my bike and 2 flat tires on his to keep up.  i go to the world cup at fort william every year, absolutely brilliant, but i think the scottish should really try to sort out their midge problem!Big Smile

i watched the 10km open water swim, and the british swimmer was delirious at the end and had to be put in an ambulance and given oxygen!  he still got a silver though.Yes

Re: olympic pride

Does get tricky - play music while doing weights though which helps the motivation a lot!

Even a little gymnastic girls do make the football team that I support (and yet another rip off season ticket fee!) look pathetic!! Broken Heart

Re: olympic pride

Although not a huge fan of the Olympics I believe we must have a smidgen of pride, considering their collective achievements.

Saying that, I'm not sure how they can classify certain events as an Olympic sport? I think the perfect example is Dressage. All very nice and horses look pretty. Can it really be defined as a sport?Indifferent

Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
