Calling F1 fans - Martin Brundle confirms commentary move to BBC

I was fortunate enough to be at the Autocar Awards last night. Martin Brundle was hosting, and he confirmed he will be commentating on Formula One races for the BBC next year - the announcement will be made official on the 24th.

Ron Dennis was also in attendance - picking up a gong, in fact - and talked us all through that last lap in Brazil. He claims there was only a six-seconds-or-so period when McLaren thought they might have blown the championship (when the Toyotas' first sector times on dry tires weren't quite as slow as they'd predicted); then the second-sector times came in and they knew - bar a major ***-up - that Lewis would overtake Glock.

Anyway, lots more discussion last night on how 2009 will be different with the changes in rules/regs - roll on March!

That is good news, entertaining and very experienced. The best of the ITV team thats for sure.

I've seen a video on youtube where one of the Autocar test drivers tries his luck in a F1 car. Brundle was there and seemed really modest and down to earth, top man in my book. Let me see if I can find the video............. ah here we go, it's in 3 parts.

Did anyone watch Top Gear on Sunday ? I think Mika deserves a medal for managing to teach Captain slow how to drive a rally car. Amazing car control when he was power sliding around that track in the Merc (Mika that is).

Yes, I saw TG, and agree re Mika - in fact that whole Finnish segment was great. Wish we had driving tests like that!

The piece on the Toyota concept car-chair also came in handy, as I was sat on the same table as a Toyota guy last night, and it gave me something to talk about beyond a) Timo Glock and b) The Prius/eco cars!

And who would have thought that Mika would have a personality!

There are some pictures on ITV-F1.com/Planet-F1.com of the some of the teams testing at Barcelona and the cars set up for next years new regulations look really retro. Slick tyres, wide front spoilers, narrow rear spoilers. Wierd

Good to see someone who knows what they are talking about (98 F1 career points, 9 podiums, a Le-Mans victory and World Sportscar champion 1988) will be commentating for the BBC. I was worried that one of the Top-Gear clowns would be the 'expert' commentator!

I still recall the 'glory days' of the Murray Walker and James Hunt double-act. (Did Murray ever get anything right?) Huge fun....
