Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

Booted up my 360 yesterday evening after not using it for a few days and was greeted buy a system upgrade notice, so let it strut its stuff and low and behold a nice new user interface for the 360 was born!

Gone are the hum-drum Windows like side scroling pages and basic gamer pics, and HELLO to nice new customiseible avatars and more userible and actractive interface. Puts the PS3 system to shame!

Well Done Mr Gates!

The upgrade should allow you to run games from the HDD (space allowing) thus reducing fan noise. Allegedly.

agreed, the update is brilliant.  i have been desperate for multi player private chat, and it will take a while to get used to how fast and quiet it is now i'm playing from the hdd.

Get an Elite, no rrod problems and a much bigger disk space for downloading your games on to! No fan noise at all now, the only noise is the same noise u get when ur on the dashboard! Fantastic!

Re: Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

Not entirely convinced by the update. I quite liked the old dashboard, and the avatars have missed the 'cuteness' of Nintendo's Mii's and look a bit 'meh' to me

Re: Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

Only just got around to doing this - on the whole I love it:

1. I don't find the new look offensive.

2. I hate the avatars.

3. I love the fact you can now copy your games to hard disk. As mentioned above it does quieten the fans down, but it also shuts the noisy transport up and (I think) speeds up load times. Of course I can see why Microsoft have made it essential for you to have the disk in at the same time but I think this is a let down.

Surely part of the point of storing games on the hard disk is convenience and being able to store the games so they don't get scratched? I have put zero though into it but surely the boffins can come up with a better idea - being able to download the games to one machine only? (off the top of my head).

Re: Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

I like some of the features in the update, but much preferred the old interface.

The whole avatar thing just seems like a (bad) rip-off of the Wii system, and is a very poor try compared to the 'Home' feature on PS3 (which I was lucky enough to get an invite to).

Not really impressed overall.

Re: Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

I feel the same - some bits are a bit better, but it just seems a lot harder to find what I want e.g. on Xbox Live (so much so I don't really bother looking any more). The old system might have been "dull" but at least it was functional.

Re: Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

Very impressed on this side, the whole thing is easier to navigate thru although a few things could be taken out. The avatars are not functional but have not come across two that look the same so it sets up a kind of identity for every gamer.

I dont see how this is a copy of PS3's mythical "home". First of all the avatars arent designed to walk around as they do in home. All they are a extention of the gamerpic, which i believe "home" itself tried to copy this idea of an online identity.

PS3 also has these so called "trophies" lol which we all knw are a copy of achievements.

The only thing i believe that Microsoft has copied is copying games to the 360. To be honest it is a great idea by Sony and i love this feature on my 360. However, i can gaurantee there will be someone right at this very minute trying to figure a way out of not having to put the disc in. Big Smile

Ginder:

I don't think it's a copy of Home, but it seems like a pretty blatant rip-off of the little Mii fellas Smile Home, I feel, is something new on consoles with regard to user ID/personalisation (although it still just seems like a suped-up version of Second Life to me!). And Home is no longer mythical, there are thousands of beta users now, and hopefully it will continue to get better before full release.

Well, there were games being installed on MS machines (big ugly beige ones) long before the consoles existed Smile

Re: Round of Applause for Mr Gates!

Beta users are still not the mass market, and the only way Home will prove its worth is when it comes out for everyone to use. Is it meant to be a product that keeps PS3 owners occupied while they wait for looooooooooooong awaited games like Killzone 2???

NXE on the 360 does the job, nothing more nothing less and i thinks thts what it intended to do.
