Upgrading my 28" TV to a flatscreen....at last

My wife has finally agreed to let me upgrade my 28"CRT TV to a flatscreen. I have negotiated a 37"screen size and having trawled the internet and WHAT HI*FI magazine am at a loss as to which TV will suit my needs best. I watch a lot of sports and films through SKY+, soon to be SKY HD and play games on my PS3. I was leaning towards a SONY, PHILLIPS and PANNASONIC model but just don't know any more. I need it to best show BLU-RAY via the PS3 and to keep up with fast moving games and sport inc golf football, motor sport.

Can anyone give me advice as to just what would be my best choice??

My budget is about£750

Thanks have been looking at the TH37PX80B as an option but always been wary of plasma due to romours of screen burn and re gassing to maintain picture quality.... I think that goes to show what a novice I am!!

Just found this TV for under £500 in Sainsbury's so its well within my budget. With The PS3 and SKY+ I might just add a surround sound system as well if so what recommended?? Will need to keep it arround £500 though!!!

Any suggestions???

Just to confuse you a little, sony have just released a 37v4500 lcd (720p) and ive also seen the panasonic 37lzd800 (1080p) on the internet for £750....

My firend had got the th37px80 though and it is a fantastic tv so dont let me put you off. Its just that im in a similar position but really want to get the best picture posible so dont know where to go from here!

Re: Upgrading my 28" TV to a flatscreen....at last

I originaly had the Panasonic TX37LZD800 LCD. It was a really nice looking set but the SD picture was not great and the colours looked too vibrant/un natural to my eyes. The blacks were also not as good as I had hoped for. It also had a major back bleed issues so it went back. I got it replaced with the TH37PX80 plasma and I have to say it is amazing. Blacks are really deep, the colours look natural and the SD picure is great. There is a very slight difference in HD quality between the two sets as the plasma is 1080i/720p. I think this is because I am sat about 7 feet away. That aside the plasma is an easy winner in my eyes. I have had no issues with screen burn and I have fallen asleep with it on, on several occasions !! The picture also seems to get better with time as well. You might want to read up on running in times for plasmas, but if you don't have the picture settings too high you should be fine.

Re: Upgrading my 28" TV to a flatscreen....at last

i also upgraded from 28inch crt to the Panny Plasma, its just so much better.  The impression i get from others is that LCD tvs arent so good with fast moving e.g. football images, which was one of my own concerns.

the 37px80 is only hd ready rather than full hd, so there is a slight compromise over picture quality compared to the sony 37inch  LCD which is fullhd, but the cost saving, the sports image and the fact its just a great picture makes up for it.

Thanks for the advice

I have also found the Phillips 37PFL5603D which has a 44000:1 ratio which sems ok and I cant find any articles on the Sony 37v4500 lcd. It seems the Plasma Panny is the choice over the LCD version but what are your thoughts on the competitors?

At 37" I would challenge anyone to suggest a better set than the TH37PX80. (Now I've gone and done it !!) Plus if you like your sport it is great, no smearing like with LCD. Football in HD looks amazing on this set. Plus at £500 online it is an absolute steal. Also I think I am correct in thinking it won What Hi-Fi product of the year at 37".
