He ain't heavy, he's my Plasma!

I am just about to buy either a Sony 40W4500 or a Panasonic 42PZ85B.

I must admit I am slightly put off the Sony by the controversy about the backlight/clouding issue, especially as I usually watch films late at night in a darkened room.   The great black level and motion performance of plasmas is also swaying me towards the Panasonic.

One slight concern I have is the weight.   I would be hoping to have the set delivered mid week, and don't think I could wait until one or other of my friends (who do not live close by) are able to get over at the weekend to help me lift it out of its box and onto an equipment stand (the top shelf of the one I have is about 32" off the floor)!

According to the specs, the 42PZ85B is about 34kgs with pedastal stand.   I'm not sure how easy that would be to handle, nor how heavy it actually feels, if that's not a stupid question.    I wouldn't want to break my back, which isn't too great anyway!

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Re: He ain't heavy, he's my Plasma!

34kg is about 1 and 1/3 of a bag of sand/cement/plaster if thats much help which is quite heavy, especially with a "dodgy" back. depending where you buy it from they may unpack/set it up for you. failing that ask the delivery person to give you a hand with it even if it cost's you a drink its worth it rather than risk dropping your shiny new set or worse injure yourself.

Thanks for the advice - I thought I was being a bit optimistic! Wink

Re: He ain't heavy, he's my Plasma!

Have just bought the exact same TV which arrived yesterday - couldn't wait for my girlfriend to come over in the evening so unpacked it, put it on the pedestal and lifted it onto the TV stand myself. So certainly possible (I'm 5'10" and 12st). Just be careful and make sure you are lifting everything properly!

Re: He ain't heavy, he's my Plasma!

Thanks, that's quite encouraging!

I did think about moving it up in small steps, e.g. firstly onto a piece of wood or similar about 6 inches off the floor, then from there to something a foot off the floor.    Not sure if I'd run out of supports before reaching the top!
