I still haven't seen problems with or had complaints from paying customers about large screen Sony LCD sets which, WHEN THEY ARE SET UP PROPERLY, look fantastic. On standard definition viewing distance is vital and if you are viewing from closer than 10 foot 50"+ is far too big. I'd be interested to know whether the Sony Centre you visited explained this properly because balancing size against viewing distance is one of the central tenets of our approach.
At those sizes I'd be waiting to see the new KDL-55X4500, although price might be an issue at the best part of £5k. It uses proper dynamic RGB backlighting (unlike the Samsungs which uses white LED backlighting) comprised of 2 green for every 1 blue and 1 red. I'm expecting to see one in the next few days and believe its set to be a major step forward.
Then there is the new ZX series which uses edge LED backlighting and a reflective layer to provide even backlighting across the screen AND its only 9.9mm thick. The seperate media box streams wirelessly to the TV at 1080i (with 3 HDMI inputs) and there is a direct HDMI socket on the set itself which provides full 1080p. We're currently demonstrating the wireless streaming on the new KDL-40EX1 and it is working extremely well, even in our shop full of TVs, bluetooth laptops and all manner of wireless networks and connections. The use of bluetooth technology for the remote instead of infrared makes placement of the media box very flexible too (ours is placed well away from the actual screen to demonstrate the flexibility of the system).
Large screen OLED at reasonable prices is still some way off. We will be getting an 11" model in our store fairly soon, but its still developing technology. Looks exciting though.
Audiophile?? NO! I'm a MUSICPHILE who happens to require the highest possible sound quality from my hi-fi.
Its ALL about the music.
