Why aren't cables black?

My interior fashion-conscious (female) friend wants to know why cables don't have black sheathing so they can be hidden and/or less obtrusive. It has to be noted that most cables are silver or white in colour. Sarcastic or otherwise comments posted here please :)

Re: Why aren't cables black?

For the same reason that radiators arent black. Most people dont have dark coloured walls, so it makes sense for them to be made a light colour.

Next! :p

Re: Why aren't cables black?

I dislike both black and white cables for some reason - that goes for interconnects, speaker cables, digital cables and mains.

I guess another reason is that manufacturers make them in different colours with fancy looking plugs to distinguish them from standard cables.

Re: Why aren't cables black?

I'd like to see more that have interesting colours, like you see with interconnects. For most people the cables are on show, so you might as well make a feature of them.

Re: Why aren't cables black?

Yeah got to agree with that. I wonder how they decide what colour to make particular cables in the range. I often find that the budget cables have nicer colours / look nicer  than the higher end ones.

Re: Why aren't cables black?

Interesting thread...

Our Copper-line Alpha and Copper-line product ranges have metallic PVC gold jackets in keeping with the copper theme. In our Silver-line, Silver-line Optimus and Silver-line Optimus Reference product ranges we use a combination of metallic silver PVC jackets and silver-plated nylon braids in keeping with the silver theme.

We are always keen to hear feedback as to what people like. I noticed another thread where some people preferred PVC jackets over braided jackets and this is also brought up by our customers a lot.

With regards to black jackets we have requests occasionally for this colour. Unfortunately the cost of manufacturing a cable in different colours is very expensive so we have to stick with one colour.

All the best.

Re: Why aren't cables black?

Hi Darren

Would it not be possible to customise the colour of the cables you supply buy using shrink wrap tubing over the cable? So for example your Alpha/Copper-line cables come with gold coloured PVC jackets, but if a customer wanted a different colour all you would need to do is use a coloured shrink wrap over the cable.

Just had a quick Google and the shrink wrap seems to be available in practically any colour you wish. Im not sure if this is possible but it could be a cheap way to offer your cables in different colours to match the customers requirements.

Also I have another question for you if you don't mind, I have a 42" Panasonic plasma(PZ85) and recently fitted a Tacima CS929 mains conditioning block. This has a made a big improvement to the picture quality by reducing the picture noise, especially with SD content off a standard SKY box.

What I was wondering is if I would see a further improvement by using a shielded power cable with my tv ? Would there be a problem with my tv as it uses a power lead that has a special plug that locks into the tv ? Which of your products would be suitable ?

Thanks

Re: Why aren't cables black?

Hi SpiceWeasel,

Yes we could cover the cable with flexible heatshrink and we can get this in many colours. We have offered this to customers in the past who want a particular colour (e.g., black) but in the end the customer usually decides to stick with the original cable colour.

I would certainly recommend a good quality shielded power cable from your CS929 to your PZ85 and Sky box which will improve picture and sound quality. If you use unshielded power cables then these can pick airborne noise (such as radio frequency interference) after the CS929 has filtered any such noise that is already on the mains supply. In terms of our products I would recommend the Copper-line Alpha Power Cable. As always it is best to audition and judge for yourself and as such we offer a 60 Day Money Back Guarantee.

I hope that this helps.

Kind regards,

Darren
