Re: If you could recommend one album.........

Nils Lofgren - by Nils Lofgren ( also known as the Fatman album)

A classic pop/rock album by an underated solo performer only ever recognised by togs for "Shine Silently".

The Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime - 1984. Big infulence on RHCP and Pixies, minimalist funky punk toons, great musicians, intelligent lyrics, a mammoth 43 tracks (46 on vinyl), seriously worth checking out.

Great shout. 'Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing' is genius.

I'd go for 'Rounds' by Four Tet - best album of the century so far. Muscular, tender, lyrical, abstract...

"... I must look like a dork..."

I'm the first to admit that some songs lose their impact when you write them down and, erm, take away the music and the performance.

Yeah, really interesting subject. It's a tricky one to call, but I would nominate Jeff Buckley's "Grace" album. Probably one of the top albums of the 90's.

Nah, too famous PP, doesn't count Wink

So are The Cure! Sorry TM.

Wouldn't worry about comments from a Journey fan Simon...

I would suggest Rodrigo y Gabriella's debut album. Just magic.

We're on the last freedom moped out of nowhere city and we haven't even told our parents what time we'll be back.

Re: If you could recommend one album.........

kena:

Ron Sexsmith – Time Being ,  Very underrated singer/songwriter.

Eagerly awating  new Cure album  in Oct  providing release is not delayed again.

Agreed re Ron Sexsmith - he's wonderful. Other Songs is probably my favourite of his albums. While we're on the subject of people with 'sex' in their names, Martin Sexton is worth checking out - he supported Martyn Joseph last year and was astonishing. Bit of an acquired taste though.

Thea Gilmore's Loft Music is worth listening too - cover versions including a great version of Ever Fallen in Love.

Can't imagine what a new Cure album will be like - probably buy it out of curiosity though.

Cheers

Phil

(sorry, that's more than one album!)

My favorite Ron Sexsmith album as well

Ok, here are my recommendations:
Richard Buckner's 2nd album "Devotion and Doubt" and his 3rd album "Since".
Patty Griffin's "1000 kisses" and "Impossible Dream"

Both are singer/songwriters, you may categorize their music as 'Alt-country'
