very few pro-photographers use the Sony Alpha series because they believe there are not enough lenses availalbe

No, it's because there's no pro support network.

Re: Camera

Unless you want to buy a rucksack full of lenses then I would def go for a Sony. Superb value for money compared to everything else and the camera-mounted stability is extremely useful. If you want to buy a lense for every occasion then Nikon are very easy to use and nicely designed. The kit lense you get with a Nikon will beat that with a Canon and picture quality is excellent.

Check out the D80 with an 18-135mm lense.

Re: Camera

Interested in the D80 myself. It's seen some significant price drops of late due to the arrival of the D90.

Re: Camera

Was just thinking about this and to go off at a tangent, when you say you won't be upgrading the lens in the short term, does that mean you won't be buying any lenses, or just that you want your kit lens to not need replacing?

If the former then I'd almost say you'd be better off with a really good bridge camera, as the 18-55 or similar you get in the kits will get dull pretty quickly.

Pretty much the only reason i changed from my Fuji S6500fd was because the manual focus was a pain. Other than that i could have happily stuck with it. Had fantastic built in macro capability too.

Sorry if this is redundant.

Re: Camera

What I need is something for the g/f to learn with, which can then be upgraded at a later date with new lenses, but on which the body will last a few years.

I've just been out with my photographer mate - link below.

He suggested the Canon, and a course and photoshop to start off with, also only shooting in b/w until she fully understands contrast and lighting. As far as lenses are concerned, go with the kit lens and a longer zoom lens - no need for leather shoe lenses as kit zooms are good quality on the whole for decent amateurs until the basics have been learned.

Re: Camera

in that case i'd have to again suggest the 1000d with 18-55 is kit lens (the IS is great) and the 75-300 usm III.

camera for £329.99 (£45 less than when i bought it :( ) and zoom lens for £133

My g/f (who owns a 400d) and I both compared sigma 70-300, tamron 70-300, and another canon lens and found that zoom came out best.

Will bring you in nicely under budget as you'll still get £30 cash back on the canon lens kit till jan/feb 09

Re: Camera

I had the D80. Loved it, defected to Nikon because it was in Budget and big enough for man-hands. The equiv. Canon disappeared in my mitts.

Looooved it. I looked hard at the Alpha but at the time there was no grip available and that's a dealbreaker.

Re: Camera

I have just ordered some kit...

Pentax K20d with 18-55 kit lens, and additional Pentax 50-200 zoom.

Got a very good deal too...

Body and kit lens £579.99, retails at much more elsewhere

50-200 lens £49,99, seen this being sold at up to £200

XMAS30 voucher discount

Free delivery

So all in all, less than £600 for the lot

By the way it's from Jessops, which at the moment is significantly cheaper than anywhere else.

Oh and Pentax are offering £100 cashback, so total cost £500.

Re: Camera

Pentax is suppose to be very good although I don't know much about DSLR really.  My is Canon that Clare's husband (or Is he a boy friend?) recomended to me.

Re: Camera

Nice camera that is - not quite as good as the A350 - but a close 2nd! I think what you will like about it, is that it feels like a proper "camera", rather than a bit of plastic which takes photos (which is what the Canons feel like to me). The only one issue I had with the K20, and that was the noise levels at ISO800 and above - a bit of chroma noise, but the detail is kept quite nicely, so it can be used to good effect, luckily!

I was one of the official photographers for the Britain's Got Talent show and currently on Strictly. If you want me to photograph the next Bristol show for What Hi-Fi, i'd be more than glad!

It's true that I'm the jazz singer for our school jazz band and that I do like my prog-rock and retro hi-fi, but I don't remember being a car trader! lol! I did get myself a lovely Volvo a few weeks back though!
