Re: 5 discs you'd bring to the demo room.

I only take three.

Sarah Brightman  -  La Luna   Her version of `Winter In July` as I want to hear how good her vocal sounds on the system and it`s also a fairly modern beat/production (well it is for me anyway)

The God Machine  - Scenes From A Second Storey   lets me know how well the system can handle a grungey sound.

Rush  -  Fly By Night   although this cd is remastered it doesn`t sound that good. It`s fairly quiet and flat and is a real tester for a system. Most I`ve tried struggle with this album.

I`m losing on the swings, I`m losing on the roundabouts.

2 Live Crew - god I used to listen to them when I was 16! Gone off Rap a bit now. Did like the first streets album tho.

My 5:

Leftfield - Leftism (a popular choice it seems - you've gotta love "Melt"...)
Rodrigo y Gabriella - Rodrigo y Gabriella
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Beatles - Sgt Pepper (specifically Day In The Life)
Boomtown Rats - Tonic For The Troops (not a great recording, but one of those "if this albums sounds good on it then they all will" albums). A great album song-wise as well.

We're on the last freedom moped out of nowhere city and we haven't even told our parents what time we'll be back.

Re: 5 discs you'd bring to the demo room.

This is a toughie as I usually take at least 15 different CDs but usually play only one track from each. In the spirit of the question I have decided to narrow it down to only 5, and I have to add that these are this evenings 5 CDs. Tomorrow the list will be totally different as I remember other favourites and just where I left my Led Zep CDs.

Loretta Lynn, The Van Lear Rose - Great Jack White production and hard rocking mixed with soft C&W. I usually listen to this first in the auditioning room.If the high end is mincing your ears then look elsewhere.

Nitin Sawhney, Beyond Skin - The music is a bit on the contrived side but the bass is about as low as I have heard and there is masses of detail. If the system can't punch you in the guts then it just aint shifting enough air!

Shakti, One Night In Bombay - My favourite live recording, having heard Shakti in concert this recording really does capture the atmosphere of the venue and the virtuosity of the players. Every time I hear the album I am in Bombay (Actually I saw them in Bristol, but what the heck!)

Hot Lub of Cowtown, Hot Jazz, Hot Swing, Hot Club - Need I say more, this studio recording captures the spirit of the band live. Fantastic musicianship hiding behind seemingly lightweight songs, a great production that always gets me grinning. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. No foot tapping = no purchase.

Dusty Springfield, Dusty In Memphis. A seemingly simple production, but if your system is up to it, just listen to that band, and Dusty is in fantastic voice. One of those records I return to after I have played all of those flashy recordings that make your hifi sound, well like a hifi.

I have missed out many long term favourites that make hifis sound good (Rumours, what a fantastic recording), terrible (Elvis Costello - My Aim is True, grimer than a grim thing but what great songs) and just want to jump along to (Legendary Shack Shakers- any!)

Re: 5 discs you'd bring to the demo room.

Good question, I would probably take around 10 but I don't think I would stray too far from

The Who - Who's next, probably Baba O'riley, though the whole album is great. What more can I say? A masterclass of bass, drums, guitar and vox.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Blood, Sugar etc, probably Funky Monks becuase it gives the base a good work out.
Lenny Kravitz - Let love rule, Freedom Train. A great track on a pretty good album, if a little too bright at times.
Crosby, Stills & Nash - You don't have to cry for the beautiful harmonies and acoustic guitar.
Led Zep - 1, Baby I'm gonna leave you for the dualling acoustic guitars and to hear Robert lick his lips before he sings!

As a cheeky bonus I would say Frank Sinatra - The reprise years, It was a very good year. Just a beautiful choclatey velvet recording.
Turntable - LP12/Lingo, Cartridge - Lyra Argo i, Pre amp - Audio Research SP9, Power amp - Musical Fidelity P270, Speakers - PMC OB1, Cables - Chord Anthem (I) and Chord Odyssey 2 (S)

Re: 5 discs you'd bring to the demo room.

I have recently done exactly this and ended up taking about 10 CD's but playing only a couple of tracks from each. To Narrow it down to 5 it would have to be

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

Tender Buttons - Broadcast

Coles Corner - Richard Hawley

My Sound - Stereotyp (for anyone who likes Burial seek this album out, released in 2002 on G-Stone label)

Head Hunters - Herbie Hancock
