American firm Amimon has made a breakthrough in the drive towards wireless HDMI connectivity, with the announcement yesterday that its Wireless High-Definition Interface (WHDI) technology has been approved for use with the HDCP specification.

The HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) specification was necessary for wider take-up of the wireless solution, due to the security needs of the content industry.

The WHDI chipset has been available for several months and has shown impressive performance results, and this announcement will pave the way for hardware manufacturers to include the chipset in their products.

So, now that Amimon has received HDCP approval, how long will we wait before a raft of new products offering wireless HDMI connectivity hits the UK? Watch this space....

I will be watching this closely as it would be great to wirelessly connect my ceiling mounted projector and fill the holes in the ceiling. Range could be an issue, as could line-of-sight as mine are 6m apart with no direct sight line. Also, I suspect components will require "pairing" for any multiple source/display set-ups. If it has a good (whole house) range with an RF communication, it could be a fantastic solution.
